While working at The Spectrum as the Creative Director, my editor in chief came to me with this big cover story.

One of the players on the university’s football team was turning out to be one of our best players in the school’s history. We were doing a full football season preview issue, but Khalil’s story was our main focus. Aaron, the editor in chief, came up with idea of making the cover look like an EA Sports video game cover as it was a part of the story. As an avid gamer and a big sports fan, I was immediately on board.

The design went on to win two national awards: Second Place for Best Newspaper Sports Page in CMA’s Best of Collegiate Design and also Fifth Place for Best Newsmagazine/Special Section Cover in ACP’s Design of the Year Awards.
