Mystery, Inc.

SIDE PROJECT

“Mystery, Inc.” is a 3D scene I modeled, painted, and lit in MagicaVoxel. If you’re unfamiliar with MagicaVoxel, it’s described as “a free lightweight 8-bit voxel art editor and GPU based interactive path tracing renderer.”

It’s an impressive product that was fairly easy to pick up after just a few tutorials.

At the time I was watching the Mystery Incorporated (2010) show on Netflix and loving the art style. I thought it’d be fun to model the Mystery Machine and learn a new skill along the way!

The Mystery Machine by itself is 45 objects. Each object is represented by the orange outlines and are 126x126x126 voxels each. I very quickly learned the importance of layers and object grouping in MagicaVoxel. The entire scene—including the foreground, tree, and streetlight—is another 42 objects.
